Superbad is coming! - Posted on July 20th, 2007

I’m very happy and excited about the music I wrote for the upcoming film SUPERBAD, hitting US theaters on August 17. This film is a Judd Apatow production, and my second full score under his umbrella since The 40 Year Old Virgin. It is another comedy, co-written and staring Seth Rogan (Knocked Up), with Jonah Hill (Knocked Up), Michael Cera (Arrested Development), and Bill Heder (SNL). The film is hilarious, and I’m proud to be attached to it.

What’s special about the music: At Superbad’s infancy, the combination of 60’s-70’s funk, R and B and even blaxploitation had been established for the film’s musical makeup. Between myself and the filmmakers it was unanimous that the original music be as authentic as possible; to sound as soulful and greasy as the songs and score music temped in to inspire us. The direct course to authenticity dictated we involve the musicians who were the originators and innovators, the most influential names synonymous with funk.

We aimed for soul royalty going after the alumni of James Brown’s band. Bootsy Collins was the first on board. For the uninitiated, he was James’ groundbreaking bassist in the early seventies before joining George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, to name a few. We then nabbed the funkiest of funky drummers, Clyde Stubblefield and John “Jab’o” Starks, both heard on James’ most popular songs. Adding Phelps “Catfish’ Collins on guitar and keyboard genius Bernie Worrell on keys, and we had ourselves the dream band. Many had not seen each other in years, and the sprit in the studio was very much a family reunion. It was really something to behold. Rounding out the ensemble were local Los Angeles musicians celebrated at the top of their field; Jerry Hey and his amazing horn section, Luis Conte, Jeff Babko and other stellar players. In the end, what was achieved from this joyous congregation far exceeded all expectations.

A soundtrack CD will accompany the release of the movie available August 7, and it will feature much of my music with many tracks expanded and lengthened. I hope you’ll check it out, and see the movie!

I have a myspace page - Posted on April 17th, 2006

I finally got with the program and created a myspace page www.myspace.com/lyleworkman. In the music player I’ve uploaded a freshly mixed piece slated for my next record; a nine minute track – you know, like the good old days. Reminder – I’m playing a Sting show in Vegas on April 29. Check out Sting.com for details. Hope you had a great Easter!
